Switching from Google Chrome to Microsoft Edge: Quick, Easy, and Planting Trees
By Clifford P
Before now, Edge was working on some things I wanted in place before switching, particularly making sure Extensions could be included in the profile sync.
It’s finally time that I recommend switching your primary browser from Chrome to Edge. Here are my compelling reasons for you to switch as well:
I trust Microsoft with my privacy more than Google. Google ain’t never gonna quit… logging your personal information #RealTalk
Edge can import all your Chrome extensions, automatically replacing ones available from its own Store as native extensions and still importing the others from the Chrome Store (first enable extensions from Other Stores)
All my Chrome extensions work as expected (including one for a paid service whose Support said Edge wasn’t a supported browser)
Edge can turn any webpage into a standalone app (like Fluid), such as keeping WordPress admin screen or your time keeping web app in its own separate taskbar icon with support for task switching (Cmd+Tab)
Edge’s downloads screen can filter by download type (PDF, compressed files, etc.)
Edge has a setting to always open PDFs in your computer’s PDF app instead of in a new browser tab
Edge can remove duplicates from your Favorites
Bonus: As Chrome does, it offered me a variety of search engine providers but came with one I hadn’t heard of before: Ecosia
…each search with Ecosia actually removes 1 kg of CO2 from the air, which makes Ecosia a carbon-negative search engine.
…if Ecosia were as big as Google, it could absorb 15% of all global CO2 emissions! That’s enough to offset vehicle emissions worldwide.
They make money by Bing sharing ad revenue with them (source)
Did you know there’s a wrong way to plant trees and doing it wrong can actually harm, including putting off CO2 instead of consuming it? See the video below.
Notes
When you start the switch, it’ll prompt you to import from Chrome, which is great but maybe premature.
Get your Microsoft account connected, enable extensions from Other Stores, and then run the importer from Chrome to Edge. You can run it (and re-run it) whenever you need.
However, importing the open tabs didn’t work for me. This could have been because I had Chrome open (although it didn’t say I shouldn’t) or because I had over 70 (I know! I was doing a lot of research).
The Session Buddy extension came to the rescue, though. Just go to Session Buddy on Chrome, export as JSON, copy to clipboard, go to Session Buddy on Edge, import, paste, then Open.
You can also check out the Microsoft Edge forums to offer feedback and view others’ discussions.
