WordPress Resources

As a WordPress expert, we come across a lot of good information. We have a lot we could share, but this is what we have for now.

WordPress in use around the web

Recommended Plugins and Themes

A couple good lists from Compete Themes and Press Customizr.

Managed WordPress Hosting

We’ve used a handful of hosts over the years and Lightning Base continues to be our preferred host.
(Affiliate link that compensates us, but we’d recommend them even if it wasn’t. We’re affiliates for other WordPress hosts as well but didn’t include those links here.)

We’ve hosted with WP Engine, SiteGround, and some other well-known WordPress-specific ones. Although we know better than to use hosting that’s not optimized for WordPress, it’s inevitable that we’ve also worked with GoDaddy, 1&1, Dreamhost, and more when handling/converting clients who came to us with an existing site. Along that same line, we’ve familiar with Squarespace, Wix, and the rest.

Managed WordPress hosting means the server is tuned for WordPress, both in terms of performance and security, and that the support is very knowledgeable in WordPress.

Lightning Base is this and much more:

  • Easy staging site creation
  • HTTPS via Let’s Encrypt or a custom certificate
  • CDN provided (works over HTTPS)
  • SSD hard drives
  • Nightly backups for 30 days
  • Multisite support
  • Help with any hacks (haven’t ever experienced this)

Their support is in the USA, and I’ve described it when talking with friends as “annoyingly-fast support” because I’m used to submitting a ticket, getting up from the computer to get a drink, and then getting started on a different task… but they’ve already replied! Of course, this isn’t a guarantee that you’ll always receive 5-minute responses, but honestly they do provide lightning-fast, thorough, forward-thinking replies each. and. every. time.

Bonus: pricing — They don’t advertise it but if you use my affiliate link above and then mention this deal to them — and have multiple hosting services with them (such as 1 per client site) — their pricing will be 50% off all but your highest-priced service. So if you have 5 sites, each at the $10/mo hosting level, you would actually be charged $10 + 4 * $5 = $30, not $50!

There are other fine hosts, but Lightning Base offers it all for a really affordable price. Comparable services like Pantheon, WP Engine, Flywheel, Kinsta, Pagely, Pressable, etc. are also good but I don’t personally prefer them for most customers. Enterprise-level customers may be interested in the enterprise plans these hosts offer, along with more hands-on/white-glove server management they may provide.
